SLIPCOVER FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS

The type of fabric needed for slipcovers must have certain characteristics. We highly recommend ordering samples prior to purchase to check for the following:

  • Supple. Since slipcovers are not attached to the furniture, the fabric must be able to drape well over the arms and back. It can not be stiff or overly heavy.
  • Washable with very little shrinkage – Being able to wash your slipcover is one of the basic requirements for a slipcover. Many natural fiber fabrics, cotton and linen, are now pre-washed and pre-shrunk at the mill. You’ll find this included in the information about the fabric.
  • To test your sample for shrinkage – Place the sample, at least 4” x 4” square, on a sheet of paper and trace the shape. Place a dot on one edge of the sample and a dot on the paper. Totally saturate the sample in COLD water. Squeeze, do not wring, out as much water as you can and then blot. Lay out on a flat surface and allow to dry. When dry, place the sample back on the paper tracing and place the fabric side with the dot on the tracing side with the dot. Align one edge of the fabric with one side of the tracing. If the fabric shrank, measure the width of tracing and the width of fabric. Subtract the width of the fabric from the width of the tracing. Divide the result by the width of the tracing to see the percentage of shrinkage. You don’t want more than 3%.
  • Full cuts Not pieces – Make sure that the fabric is in one continuous piece, not cuts. This makes it very difficult to cut the large pattern sections required for furniture slipcovers and you may need more fabric to compensate.
